Frequently Asked Questions

HOW LONG WILL MY MOUTHGUARD LAST?

Players up to the age of around 18 will need a new mouthguard every year, as teeth grow and change over the course of a season and the summer or winter break.

If you’re older, a well-fitting mouthguard made by Protex can last up to five years if you care for it properly.

WHICH MOUTHGUARD DO I CHOOSE?

Under 12’s

We recommend our Standard Guard for anyone under 12 years of age. This mouthguard can accommodate braces and erupting teeth. It is a Single Layered Mouthguard and good for players in low level collision sports.

Age 12 – Adult

We recommend our Professional Guard. This Double Layered Mouthguard provides a greater level of protection for most sports where heavier contact may be received on the jaw, eg AFL, rugby, martial arts, hockey etc

Ages 15 – Adult, and playing high collision sports

We recommend our Ultimate Guard for Perth’s serious athlete and those who want the best protection available on the market today! This is a Triple Layered Mouthguard, maximising protection, and recommended for elite sports athletes and anyone involved in high collision sports such as kick boxing or hockey.

WHAT IF MY CHILD HAS MISSING OR GROWING TEETH?

All three types of mouthguards are suitable for growing teeth. Our highly skilled technicians are able to replicate the shape of the growing tooth, making a space and allowing for the tooth to continue growing throughout the season. For younger players we strongly recommend the Standard and Professional Guards.

WHAT ABOUT KIDS WITH BRACES OR A FIXED ORTHO PLATE?

You’ll find that a mouthguard from Protex is excellent in both comfort and protecting a child’s developing smile (and your investment).

The impression appointment will take a little longer as we employ additional techniques to ensure the comfort of our patients when taking the impressions.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY MOUTHGUARD?

Clean your mouthguard with liquid soap and running warm (not hot) water.

As a matter of routine we recommend that you flush out the mouthguard before and after use with water from your sports bottle.

If you are over 18 and keeping your mouthguard for several years you may like to use a cleaning tablet once in a while for a thorough clean.

These are readily available and we can supply you with one on request.

WHAT ABOUT SELF IMPRESSION KITS?

We do not supply or endorse “self impression kits” as these pose several problems with fit and protection.

“Only a trained dental prosthetist or dentist should ever take your impression.”
